Autonomous Robotic Inspection and Maintenance on Ship Hulls

Test week for the Pioneer at the Klagenfurt University

[Testing week]

Field tests!

👷‍♀️ In October 2022, partners from the University of Trondheim (NTNU) and University of Klagenfurt (UNI-KLU) met in Klagenfurt, Austria for a two-week test.

đź’» During the two weeks NTNU and KLU worked on the improvement of the localisation system based on the MaRS framework (developed by the University of Klagenfurt) and tried to include image and sonar processing in the loop.

⛴️ Several tests were performed in the Lake Worthersee and partners were able to access ferries to obtain more realistic data. The first autonomy tests on ships were also conducted there.

The challenge here: the underwater robot needs to know where it is without a GPS signal and it needs to be able to navigate autonomously. The low texture and smooth surface of the hull present obstacles to accurate camera or sonar-based navigation.

These weeks of testing were productive!

University of Klagenfurt wrote an article about the tests and the project, available here.
