On-site field tests on storage silos

[Testing week]

Field tests!

👨‍💻 Last month, partners from the University of Aachen (RWTH) and the University of Trier (UT) travelled to Metz for a test week. They also went to the Cristal Union site in Bazancourt, France, to carry out new tests in real conditions with ROBOPLANET and CNRS.

🛠️ The primary focus of this week was to further the integration between the crawler and the user interface while leveraging key HCI/HRI elements. To this end, the CNRS and RWTH successfully integrated a mesh of the inspection object as well as the real-time crawler localisation and thickness measurements of the inspection object into the user interface.

💻 In addition, RWTH carried out preparation and development of the Augmented Reality application focusing on aligning the virtual world and the real world. CNRS and RWTH further demonstrated to our partners, ROBOPLANET, this could be displayed as a web-based desktop application or in Virtual Reality seamlessly with real-time updates.

👩‍🏫 Complimenting this, UT was able to leverage CNRS, RWTH and ROBOPLANET to apply findings about the design requirements to the implementation process. In addition, UT discovered new challenges regarding User Interface design for ship inspection, which have been protocolled to be considered in the future process.

All in all, this week of testing was very productive and a success!
